Alternative Cancer Treatment: The Controversy in Virginia

What do you suppose the first thought a person just diagnosed with cancer has? Do they think about death? Do they think about chemotherapy and other medical treatments? What would you think of first if you found out you had cancer?
For me, I've already decided that if I ever do get cancer, I will not seek out the conventional medical cancer interventions and treatments that are the society standard today. I've decided I will seek a natural route, one that does not involve chemotherapy and the destruction of my healthy cells as well as cancer cells. I've decided I will seek a treatment that does not weaken me physically, but rather helps to empower and strengthen my body.
This decision has come to me over my lifetime, and personally seeing relatives suffer through this type of treatment, only to quickly deteriorate, and in my opinion, die a faster, more painful death than if they'd had not treatment at all. Dramatic statement, I know, but nonetheless, this is my opinion.
I do not know what natural therapy or lifestyle changes I would actually choose if I were in that position, but I do know this is how I would choose to fight my battle, and I would hope that with some prompted research, the natural choice would make itself apparent. This is my personal choice, and no one could change my mind.
Now, consider this. What if I were only 16 years old, and I had come to this same conclusion, with the added caveat that I had actually had chemotherapy and been severely debilitated by it once already? Does the government or a judge have the right to intervene and order medical treatment, which I do not believe in, and in fact, which I believe will actually kill me, if not dramatically jeopardize my quality of life?
That's exactly what is transpiring right now for a 16 year old Virginia man (I say man, because this particular teen carries himself like an adult), with 2nd stage Hodgkins disease, a form of cancer that is very treatable the first time around, but upon recurrence, is less treatable and more deadly, requiring more drastic traditional chemotherapy and radiation.
Initially, the teen did undergo chemotherapy when the cancer was first discovered. He was weakened so badly, and in so much pain, that when his oncologist ordered a second round of more agressive chemo and radiation when the cancer returned, he refused and sought out an alternative cancer treatment called the Hoxsy method.
It is important to note that this natural, herbal method of cancer treatment, which is paired with a sugar free diet, has been banned by the FDA in the US, and he had to travel to Mexico in order to receive the daily herbs he had to take as well as intructions on how the treatment worked.

His parents advised the teen's oncologist of their intentions for further alternative treatment, but said they'd like his continued medical monitoring. The oncologist felt this was neglect, and reported his parents to the authorities for investigation of medical neglect.
The case is now in court, and so far the judge has ordered the teen to undergo the chemotherapy treatments that he has so adamantly refused. I ask, how can you force someone who is obviously so against a certain medical treatment, to receive that treatment, regardless whether they are an "adult" as defined by today's standards?
I can guarantee this teen has been forced to become much more mature than his biological years already through this ordeal, and is more than capable of making his own choices in his method of cancer treatment. Is this morally and ethically right? Or is it morally and ethically right to give him chemo, which many believe may actually save him while the alternative methods cannot possibly work?
I suppose it depends on your point of view, whether you are a believer in the pharmaceutical and medical industry or not. I for one have lost a lot of faith in the medical industry, and I believe that this choice should be left to the person it affects most. And that is, the one who has the cancer, the one who's life has been so dramatically changed and nearly ruined by chemotherapy. Is it not up to the individual, or is this just a case of "the establishment" having their way?

And Cancer Survival

health conditions for which we can’t always pinpoint a cause. We know exactly how serious health conditions such as AIDS are contracted, but cancer is trickier. Many times cancers are caused by environmental factors such as chemicals, smoking, exposure to natural sunlight and unnatural sunlight, such as tanning beds, and even x-rays. Sometimes cancers are genetic; the odds of developing them are great, or, they are simply triggered by these kinds of factors. And then there are the times when cancer shows up unexpectedly with no surface explanation. While we don’t always know what causes cancer, we do know certain steps we can take to help prevent cancer, and maintaining a healthy weight is one of those steps. Studies show that obesity can contribute to various kinds of cancers, such as ovarian, endometrial, colon, kidney, and breast cancers. Being obese can also aid in preventing a person from cancer survival, and even serve to speed up the progression of cancer. We have treatments for cancer, and sometimes those treatments work. Whether cancer treatments work temporarily or for a lifetime is basically a case-by-case outcome. What isn’t case-by-case, however, is the cost of cancer treatment. Having adequate health insurance can help cover the cost of cancer treatment, but most health insurance policies don’t cover all costs, and some don’t even cover the treatments at all. Therefore, relying solely on your health insurance policy to cover the cost of cancer treatments and, hopefully, cancer survival, isn’t wise. Cancer survival isn’t about how much health insurance you have. Cancer survival isn’t about having the best health care that money can buy. Cancer survival is about taking the necessary steps to treat yourself. And, taking the steps to prevent cancer, rather than the steps to finding a health insurance policy that will cover you once you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, should be the first steps you take.About The Author:http://www.myquoteguide.com/Car-Tips.shtml http://www.ezquoteguide.com/home/ http://www.ezquoteguide.com/car/

Tanning And Cancer by Javier Fuller

Health

If one were living in any of the colder regions of the world, the tell tale signs of having enjoyed a good vacation would be to wear a tan, acquired from hours of lazing in the sun, on some beach. Better still, is the idea of wearing a tan regularly by resorting to tanning under a tanning bed, under artificial conditions. While the latter form of tanning may look very authentic and satisfactory, it is a process of tanning that is fraught with the risk of cancer.
Thus, the debate on tanning and the risks of cancer has been raging as a debatable issue with strong contenders on both sides. Several studies have shown that tanning under a tanning bed can increase the risk of getting cancer. On the other hand studies have shown that tanning has helped reduce the risks of cancer by its controlled system that reduces the risk of sunburn.
The UV rays that tanning under lights creates stimulates the skin cells. The activated and stimulated skin cells produce more melanin, which is the pigment that gives skin its natural color. Thus a tanning bed activates this principle under controlled conditions and the fashion industry has promoted this method, making it highly popular among Scandinavian women. That is why the effects of tanning and the risk of cancer have been extensively carried out among this category of women. The results have shown that among the women who regularly resorted to tanning, the risk of developing cancer had increased to 55%. In the same way a similar study carried out at Dartmouth concluded that the regular user of the tanning method was two and half times more likely to develop cancer.
The above studies as well as findings from independent sources had led the American Medical Association (AMA) to adopt a resolution calling for a total ban on tanning under light, so as to prevent the incidence of cancer from this source. But the US Federal Trade Commission (USFTC) was no twilling to go with them on this resolution and declined to institute such a ban. The contention of the USFTC was that the use and sale of tanning equipment for cosmetic purposes could be permitted as it had certain healthy benefits accruing from its use.
Supporting the argument put forth by the Federal Trade Commission lobby another organization, namely the Tanning Trends, contended that tanning on a tanning bed actually reduced the risk f developing skin cancer. Their argument was based on the fact that as the conditions of tanning were being done in a controlled environment the tanning process was completely regulated and there was no risk of getting sunburn in the process. In a natural condition, as on a beach the holiday maker for instance, had no control over the tanning process and if the sun was hot then there were chances of getting too much sunburn, in the bargain. Such exposure to sunburn ran the risk of getting cancer even more. Thus by getting a tanning done on a tanning bed, the cancer could actually be prevented altogether.

My Bout with Testicular Cancer

It hit like a ton of bricks and it wasn’t something that I was prepared for – maybe later in ‎life but not at 32. In one week I went from a normal life to finding out I had testicular ‎cancer and undergoing surgery to remove the infected testicle. There was no time wasted ‎and little preparation for the blow to my psyche. ‎
The week started like any other, I went to work on Monday and something just wasn’t ‎right. As it turns out something was more than just wrong. An ultrasound on Tuesday ‎would indicate cancer had invaded my right testicle and my fears were confirmed. ‎Wednesday brought a meeting with the urologist that would remove the testicle and ‎Thursday was surgery. In less than seven days, my life changed.‎
You also have to understand that my medical life was so very charmed before all this. I’d ‎never broken a bone, had a cavity, I still have all my wisdom teeth, and I’d never had ‎surgery before. To be honest my worst fear was that I’d wake up with a tube down my ‎throat like on ER and have to deal with that. To my great comfort there was no tube, just ‎a bandage virtually duct taped to my hip and a missing testicle upon my waking in the ‎recovery room. As I walked out of the hospital that day I realized there was a long road ‎ahead.‎
Before I could begin chemotherapy, I had to bank sperm (in case the drugs left me ‎sterile), undergo breathing tests (since the Bleoymicin can scar your lungs) and have an ‎additional consultation with a radiation oncologist should my condition require radiation ‎as part of treatment. I was lucky since a pure seminoma responds well to chemotherapy ‎and likely would not require radiation. ‎
I had heard the horror stories of chemo, loosing weight, frequent bouts of vomiting, and a ‎generally miserable time. I prepared for all that, but it never came. During the course of ‎my treatment, I never got sick, actually gained weight, and the worst thing that happened ‎was that I perpetually felt tired. It’s a difficult feeling to describe, what chemo feels like ‎that is. I used to say, it feels like I’m hung over and walking through loose sand all the ‎time. But as I read the description it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me either, but that’s ‎the way it felt.‎
The bottom line is that I made it through and have been fine ever since. My chemo lasted ‎from October to December and between each cycle I had a CAT and PET scan to judge ‎the progress. All along the way we saw the infected lymph nodes get smaller and the ‎disease gradually die. ‎
You might be asking, so how did he get through? What allowed him to cope? I’ll be ‎honest – I gave in to the simple fact that I didn’t cause this. I had no hand in causing my ‎disease; it’s not like lung cancer from smoking of ruining your liver from drinking. Once ‎I came to this realization, my focus shifted to killing the disease and getting it out of my ‎body. While I can’t say that I enjoyed the weekly IV sticks and the daily trips to the ‎cancer treatment center, I didn’t mind them as much. Beyond the mental shift, my family ‎played a tremendous role in my recovery. For the surgery and the chemo my family was ‎by my side and kept me going. While I could have done virtually all of it on my own, it ‎was very helpful to have someone at the house since I really wasn’t working at this time ‎and too much time alone would not have been good. ‎
While this story seems very positive, there are a few aspects of my cancer diagnosis that ‎require some attention. First, I have this feeling that I’m not out of the woods yet. I have ‎kept up with all my follow-up visits and have regular CAT and PET scans, blood work, ‎and physical exams. However, there’s a voice in the back of my head that every now and ‎again whispers to me – beware…And finally, while my surgical scar has healed and I’ve ‎lost the weight I gained during chemo, there are emotional issues that I’ve yet to deal ‎with fully. I think some upfront counseling would have helped, but that didn’t happen ‎and now I’m dealing with it. ‎
Bottom line – testicular cancer is beatable with modern medicine. The thing is if you ‎think there’s a problem, get it checked out. Find a doctor you trust and tell them the ‎facts, while we all hope for the best case, you need to be more prepared for the truth than ‎I was. Should the diagnosis be cancer, understand that it’s not the end of the world and ‎there are places to turn like the American Cancer Society for advice and a friendly person ‎to talk to who has been where you are now. ‎
I live in South Florida and am married to a lovely woman. I have a passion for Swiss Watches and run a online watch store, www.swisswatchdeal.com in addition to my government job.

Free Articles for Reprint - Breast Cancer Treatment Options
Over the past decade there has been advancements in many of the treatments available for Breast Cancer. Through constant research we have come a long way from the limited treatment options available in the past. The top treatment choices available today are surgery, radiation, hormonal treatment (anti-estrogen based) and chemotherapy. These 4 regimins are often used in conjunction with each other or adjuvantly. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are offered a choice of treatments from this wide array it can be very confusing. We all know we want what is best for us but sometimes with the many options available how can one be sure?
We will try to provide you with an overview of the treatments available and how they relate to the stage of cancer you might have. Use this information to educate yourself so when it comes time for you and your doctor to make a decision you will know the facts on hand.
There are 3 General Types of Treatment Categories Available Today:
Local Treatment (Regional Treatment) - this type of treatment is localized to the breast and local lymphatics only or adjacent lymphatics to where the tumor was located.
Systemic Treatments - treat the whole body and are usually reserved for the prevention of spread (metastases) or directy to target spread that has occured.
Alternative Therapy - these are considered holistic therapy and can be helpful but have never been proven to cure. We will pay close attention to Local and Systemic treatments as the choices available to cure breast cancer.

Free Articles for Reprint - NanoTech and Cancer Cures at a Cross Roads
As NanoTech and BioTech merge we will soon find the cures to many of mankind’s most pressing medical issues and perhaps cures for many types of cancers. Consider micro mechanical delivery systems to the concentrated areas where cancer cells are or even search and destroy systems, which will go through the body and weed out the cancer cells from the biosystem? How far are such technologies from reality?
Not too far and some are ready to be tested on real humans, as they have already proven themselves effective in lab situations. One concept is to use micro thin carbon nano-tubes to deliver the medicine to the exact area cancerous area without hurting nearby healthy cells and the concept actually works, now it is only a matter of time to test it on humans, but really is only one of many such new techniques and technologies being considered today.
Free Articles for Reprint - What Is Asbestos And Where Did People Use This Material?
Asbestos is a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals of the hydrous magnesium silicate variety. Types of asbestos: chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite and anthophyllite. Most asbestos fibers are invisible to the human eye because their size. Asbestos testing is a very important process, since people know the dangers of this mineral (asbestos is a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals of the hydrous magnesium silicate variety). Asbestos testing should always be done by an expert. A professional should take samples for analysis, a professional knows what to look for, and because there may be an increased health risk if fibers are released. Fibers ultimately form because when these minerals originally cooled and crystallized, they formed by the polymeric molecules lining up parallel with each other and forming oriented crystal lattices. As they get smaller and lighter, they become more mobile and more easily get into the air, where human can imbibe them. The inhalation of some kinds of asbestos fibers however causes various serious illnesses, including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and asbestos related lung cancer, and thus most uses of asbestos are banned in many countries. In the ancient times asbestos was of high value as the gold. Emperors and kings had napkins made of it. Others used asbestos to make perpetual wicks for sepulchral lamps. Amosite and crocidolite were used in many products until the early 1980s. For example: low density insulation board and ceiling tiles, asbestos cement sheets and pipes for construction, casing for water and electrical/telecommunication services, and thermal and chemical insulation. In the United States used chrysolit mainly for the following products: sheetrock taping, mud and texture coats, vinyl floor tiles, adhesives and ceiling tiles, plasters and stuccos, roofing tars, "transite" panels, acoustical ceilings, fireproofing, putty, caulk, gaskets, brake pads, clutch plates, stage curtains and fire blankets. Exposure to asbestos usually occurs by breathing contaminated air in workplaces that make or use asbestos. Asbestos is also found in the air of buildings containing asbestos that are being torn down or renovated. Asbestos exposure can cause serious lung problems and cancer. This substance has been found in at least 83 of the 1,585 National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). If inhaled by humans, asbestos fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a disease which is invariably fatal. This site discusses what asbestos is, asbestosis and other diseases caused by asbestos, pleural thickening, mesothelioma, lung Cancer, prevention, asbestos in buildings, and compensation. This form of cancer is peculiar because the only known cause is from asbestos exposure. National Cancer Institute, found that people who live closer to ultramafic rock deposits, which typically contain asbestos, have higher risks than those farther away. That was before studies linked asbestos dust with cancer and lung disease. The delay between exposure to asbestos and the development of cancer is generally 20 or more years. The type of cancers includes mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, and asbestosis. The known afflictions associated with asbestos exposure are asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural plaques. Significant long term exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma and non-malignant lung and pleural disorders. Smoking also greatly aggravates the likelihood of lung cancer in workers exposed to asbestos (although smoking does not appear to increase the risk of mesothelioma). The asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer and other lung disease that may not appear until many years after exposure. But exposure to asbestos causes cancer and other diseases. British asbestos workers were among the first who were observed to have lung cancer related to asbestos. Because of the recent renovation boom, home renovators are the new suffers of asbestos cancer, or mesothelioma. Scientists have developed a blood test that can predict years in advance whether someone will succumb to asbestos cancer.About The Author:Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is strongly related to exposure to Asbestos. Asbestos is well recognized as a health hazard and is highly regulated. An estimated 1.3 million employees in construction and general industry face significant asbestos exposure on the job. Heaviest exposures occur in the construction industry, particularly during the removal of asbestos during renovation or demolition. Asbestos fibers can enter the air or water from the breakdown of natural deposits and manufactured asbestos products. Small diameter fibers and particles may remain suspended in the air for a long time and be carried long distances by wind or water before settling down. What is Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is strongly related to exposure to asbestos particularly occupational exposure. Mesothelioma is the most serious asbestos causing disease. Mesothelioma is a disease that is almost 100% preventable; the only known cause is via exposure to the deadly mineral Asbestos. There isn't any cause of mesothelioma other than asbestos, and it's obvious that the major source of the substance is Kubota. According to various researches done, the odds of developing mesothelioma decreased 6.3 percent for every 10 kilometers farther from the asbestos source. Mesothelioma has a latency period of 20 to 50 years after the first exposure to asbestos. Many employers and the manufacturers of asbestos knew about the dangers when they exposed employees to this material. Indeed, reports Forbes magazine: "asbestos defendants are very likely now paying compensation for every occupational disease known to man. Tomorrow's epidemic: The epidemic of asbestos disease is expected to peak in the next decade. Usually, a period of 10 to 40 years or more passes before the asbestos victim exhibits the first asbestos disease symptoms. There is a long latency period between exposure and the development of asbestos disease symptoms. Each state has its own set of deadlines, called statutes of limitation, for allowing victims of asbestos disease to file lawsuits. The victims of asbestos disease deserve to have these issues clearly and squarely addressed. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause permanent and irreversible damage and disease to vital organs. All types of asbestos cause disease and death.About The Author:Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is strongly related to exposure to Asbestos. Find out about Asbestos Hazards at http://www.eWhy.info
